The City of Fultondale Fire Department was established in 1948, just 1 year after the incorporation of the City of Fultondale. Our first Fire Chief was B.L. (Red) Davison. Funds were raised for the purchase of the first fire truck by selling chances to win a new car. The first fire truck, a 1948 GMC, served the city until the early 1970s when a new 1971 Ford Jayco Pumper was purchased. Additionally, a 1960s model International was placed in service to add to our fire suppression capabilities.In 1978, an E-One Custom fire pumper was purchased to retire the aging International pumper. In 2001, a 75-foot ladder truck was purchased as a demo to prepare for the commercial growth the city was about to experience. In 2009, the city was able to secure the funds to purchase a new Crimson Fire Spartan Metro Star Pumper and a new Ford F-450 Rescue Unit to help us keep up with the increasing demand for fire and emergency medical responses. As the City grew, in 2012, following the Tornado Disaster of April 27th, 2011, the City Added Fire Station 2, and a 2012 Crimson Fire Spartan Pumper to its fleet. In 2020, the City was able to secure funds and purchase a 2020 Deep South Fire Mini-Pumper to replace the aging 2000 Dodge Rescue unit and be utilized as a Rescue and Suppression Unit.Our fire department began responding to medical emergencies in 1975 when a tragic accident resulted in the death of a child in our city. The lengthy response time of the private ambulance service led the city council to purchase a rescue unit capable of responding with paramedics and training police and firefighters to become EMTs and Paramedics. Fultondale Rescue 70 (now Rescue 411) was one of the first Advanced Cardiac Life Support units licensed in Jefferson County, Alabama, and the very first unit of its kind in northern Jefferson County.Today, the Fultondale Fire and Rescue Service operates under the leadership of Fire Chief Justin McKenzie. We serve the corporate limits of the City of Fultondale, as well as certain unincorporated areas outside of the municipal limits that have no fire or emergency medical services. Additionally, we respond with automatic aid and mutual aid fire departments throughout north Jefferson County, and other areas when available. This coverage entails 20 miles worth of interstate driven, 4.6 miles of State Highway 31 North and Southbound, and 30 plus miles of County Road that passes through our City feeding the Birmingham Metro area. We operate with 23 Full-time personnel, 3 part-timers, and 12 volunteer personnel, including 9 officers to oversee department operations, inspections, community outreach, and other programs. Along with fire and emergency medical services, we operate a special response trailer for tornado and other weather disasters, as well as a medium technical rescue team, community education, fire prevention, and inspection/investigation services through two fire stations and an administrative building.
