Our History

Our History

line

Founded in the early 20th century under the name Fulton Springs, the City of Fultondale has humble roots as a mining community. In 1947, we were incorporated into the wider Jefferson County, bringing a mayor and city council members in to support our growing number of citizens. Our first city hall once stood where Municipal City Park is today.

Throughout the 60s and 70s, Fultondale's location close to Highway 31 made it the ideal stopping point for travelers going to and from Birmingham. While Interstate 65 saw traffic moving away from the area, this prosperous time allowed Fultondale to grow into today's vibrant, community-focused city.

Our city seal pays homage to our humble roots as a mining town while calling to mind the thriving commerce happening in modern-day Fultondale. Kept at the very heart of our city and our seal is our motto, “A Friendly City,” which visitors and locals alike can experience in everyday interactions with our hospitable citizens. Our seal reflects Fultondale’s present and future growth while reminding us of how far we’ve come.
